The Heart of Service
At Magnify of Central Florida, Christmas is more than a season—it’s a reflection of the love, dignity, and hope that fill our campus all year long. Few people witness that spirit more closely than David Schumacher, our Director of Residential & Life Skills, whose steady leadership helps create a true home for the individuals we serve.
As we celebrate the birth of Christ and the gift of community this season, we sat down with David to reflect on his calling, the joy of this work, and the meaning of Christmas at Magnify.
A Calling Rooted in Giving
David’s passion for serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities comes from a simple but profound desire. “I love giving back to others while inspiring them to reach higher for themselves,” he shares. “The adults we serve give that same inspiration right back to me—they push me to grow, too.”
Finding Home at Magnify
David joined Magnify during a season of transition—professionally and personally. As his family prepared to welcome a new child, he began searching for his next step. “I found Bishop Grady Villas—now Magnify—and was immediately drawn to supporting this community,” he explains. “It’s less than a mile from our home and across from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, where my children attended. It felt meant to be.” Today, his roots run deep on campus and at home, with a seventh grader at St. Thomas Aquinas, a junior at Bishop Moore, and his oldest in Tallahassee.
Everyday Miracles
During the Christmas season, David says what brings him the greatest joy is still found in the daily moments. “The day-to-day triumphs—the happiness it brings to each individual—those small victories grow into lasting milestones.” One powerful reminder this year came when students from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School volunteered at Magnify. “Seeing young students embrace inclusion reminds you that the future is full of hope.”
Growth That Reflects the Season
This year, David has been especially moved by the growth in self-advocacy and independence among residents and life skills participants. “When individuals begin to speak up for themselves and grow in confidence, it’s incredible to watch.” He describes the culture within residential and life skills as one of unconditional support—a community where individuals are encouraged to explore, learn, and experience life to the fullest.
A Team That Makes Christmas Shine
Behind every joyful Christmas celebration at Magnify stands a dedicated team. “Their compassion and commitment ensure our residents are living full and independent lives,” David says. One of his favorite memories each year is the way the team comes together to create magic—whether through parties, decorations, or simply making sure every resident feels seen and celebrated.
Gratitude in the Christmas Season
For David, Christmas on campus is filled with deep gratitude. “The love that exists here is what I’m most thankful for—and how it draws us closer to God.” He sees gratitude reflected daily in the residents themselves. “They constantly take time to thank the staff. Their appreciation is genuine and heartfelt.”
Looking Toward the New Year with Hope
As the year draws to a close, David’s hopes for the season ahead are simple and beautiful: “Laughter, joy, education, and community involvement.” He believes Magnify is set apart by its faith-driven commitment—a spiritual foundation that guides every interaction. “Our faith brightens everything we do.”
Lessons of Christmas
One lesson David says the individuals we serve continually teach him is the true value of presence. “Every moment we give to one another—no matter how small—means everything.”
And if he had to describe our residents in three words this Christmas season?
Blessed. Thankful. Joyful.
As we celebrate the birth of Christ and reflect on the year behind us, we are deeply grateful for leaders like David Schumacher—and for the hope, dignity, and love that fill our campus each and every Christmas.
