Fall Career Camp at South Lake Hospital: Personalized Learning, Career Exploration, and Real-World Independence
This fall, students from Lake Minneola High School participated in a meaningful Fall Career Camp experience at Orlando Health South Lake Hospital, held November 24–26, 2025. This immersive three-day experience allowed for individualized instruction, extended engagement, and meaningful skill development through real-world learning.
Through hands-on exploration, direct workplace exposure, and guided support, Magnify prepared participants to better understand their strengths, explore career pathways, and grow in confidence.
Day 1: Hospital Exposure & Career Discovery
Our first day focused on career exploration through guided tours of hospital environments, including the Laboratory Department and Food & Nutritional Services. Participants observed daily workflows, sanitation standards, safety protocols, teamwork, and professional expectations.
Magnify staff supported students in reflecting on what they observed — helping them connect personal interests to possible career paths while reinforcing workplace behavior and communication skills.
Day 2: Hands-On Work-Based Learning
On this day, students transitioned from observation to active participation within the Food & Nutritional Services department. They explored Dish Room Operations and Dining Room Support, learning how behind-the-scenes roles support the entire hospital.
Students demonstrated strong focus, consistency, and growing confidence throughout the day. Through applied learning, participants strengthened task sequencing, independence, workplace behavior, time management, and transitions between responsibilities.
Day 3: Community Navigation & Financial Literacy
On the final day, participants extended their learning into the community by participating in hands-on training on pedestrian safety and navigation during a guided walk to Publix. Participants practiced using crosswalks, reading walk signals, managing pace, and maintaining situational awareness.
The experience concluded with a holiday budgeting and meal-planning activity, where students tracked prices, compared options, and made spending decisions within a set budget — building essential financial literacy skills that support long-term independence and employment success.
Preparing Students for Success — One Step at a Time
Every lesson was designed to help students move one step closer to meaningful employment and greater independence. Across all three days, participants strengthened:
Career awareness
Workplace behavior
Communication and problem-solving
Independence and safety
Financial responsibility
